Match Preview CFA Cup Final: Shanghai Shenhua – Shanghai SIPG

On November 18/19 or December 2/3 the first leg of the CFA Cup Final will be played. This time both teams are from Shanghai, Shanghai Shenhua, and Shanghai SIPG.

It will be the 7th appearance of Shanghai Shenhua in the finals. The club won the CFA Cup three times (1956, 1991, 1998). This year Shanghai Shenhua reached the finals. While they played against some clubs from the second division, they were also victorious over Beijing Guoan and Shandong Luneng.

Shanghai SIPG has never reached the finals of the CFA Cup before. Similiar to Shanghai Shenhua, Shanghai SIPG played and won against two clubs from the second division before defeating Tianjin Quanjian and Guangzhou Evergrande. Noteworthy is the win over Tianjin Quanjian and Guangzhou Evergrande. Shanghai SIPG lost their first match against Tianjin Quanjian with 3-0. But two week later Shanghai SIPG made a comeback, winning the game by 4-0 and advancing to the semi-finals.

The first leg will be played on Shanghai Shenhua’s home turf on 19 November 2017. The second leg played in Shanghai Stadium will be on 26 November 2017.

Fabio Cannavaro Leaves Tianjin Quanjian

Fabio Cannavaro, who led Tianjin Quanjian to the Chinese Super League and helped them secure a spot in the 2018 AFC Champions League in their first top flight season, has announced he is leaving the northern China club. On debut they finished in an outstanding third position, close behind champions Evergrande and big spenders Shanghai SIPG. The decision for his leave was made under mutual agreement. Tianjin Quanjian stated the following: “”We sincerely thank Mr Cannavaro and his team for their contribution and bright future in his career and life.”

Tianjin Quanjian immediately introduced the replacement as former Portugal international Paulo Sousa, who left Serie A club Fiorentina this summer, and will take up the post at the start of the 2018 pre-season. Cannavaro is said to be high on Guangzhou Evergrande’s list of potential replacements for outgoing Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari, according to mainland media reports. The Italian left Evergrande in 2015.

In the 27th Chinese Super League match at 25 October, Beijing Guo’an achieved a 1-0 home victory over Chongqing Lifan. Zhang Zhe scored the penalty, which was also the only goal of the game. When the game went to the final stage, Zhang Zhe punched another player that was trying to steal the ball during a throw-in and was sent off. He instantly changed from a hero to the bad guy. Tianjin TEDA confirmed the official transfer of Frank Acheampong to the Chinese club. The coming year he will continue playing for the club. “I like the city and I love the TEDA family,” Acheampong stated. Frank Acheampong made clear his goal with Tianjin TEDA is to qualify for the AFC Champions League.

From Ghana to Thailand, from Thailand to Belgium, and now to Tianjin, China. The reason for Acheampong to leave RSC Anderlecht on loan is that at Tianjin TEDA he is guaranteed to play. The Chinese club has confirmed Frank Acheampong will formally transfer next year.

Luis Scolari leaves Guangzhou Evergrande

Coach Luis Scolari leaves Guangzhou Evergrande after leading them for 2 years. His current contract is expiring in November but the Brazilian coach has made clear he wishes not to extend his contract in order to find a new challenge.

The Brazilian coach in the past led Chelsea and the Brazilian and Portuguese national team to name a few. On 4 June 2015 Scolari was appointed as head coach of Guangzhou Evergrande. 4 months after his appointment, the Brazilian coach already managed to win the AFC Champions League. Scolari won a total of 7 titles with Guangzhou Evergrande, including 3 times the Chinese Super League. He was also was named coach of the year by the Chinese Football Association twice. His most recent achievement is winning the Chinese Super League title of the current 2017 season.

After Scolari’s contract will expire in November, he has announced that he will return to Brazil. As for his new challenge, the Brazilian coach hopes he could manage a national team for the World Cup in Russia next year.

Guangzhou Evergrande Wins 7th Title In A Row!

After 28 of the 30 rounds, Guangzhou Evergrande secures the 2016-2017 Chinese Super League title by beating Guizhou Zhicheng with 5-1. The “Guangzhou Evergrande era” started in 2011. Since then, the team has continuously won the national league in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and now 2017.

Shanghai SIPG, with Brazilian star players Hulk and Oscar, tried to take over the throne but Guangzhou Evergrande did not back down. The remaining champion is 9 points ahead of the number two, Shanghai SIPG, with 2 matches to play. Shanghai SIPG lost their game at home against the other club from Guangzhou, Guangzhou R&F.

Guangzhou Evergrande began the match very strong and scored already 2 goals in 3 minutes in the first half. The first half ended in 2-1 for Guangzhou Evergrande. In the second half, they kept on scoring resulting into a 5-1 win and securing the 2017 league title.
